March 16-18, Dr. Robert Vos attended the Advancing the Greener Supply Chain, Sustainable Packaging Symposium 2011 in Chicago co-sponsored by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and GreenerPackage.com. The two days provided updates on key trends in packaging and case studies from a wide-spectrum of companies engaged in sustainable packaging initiatives. Discussions focused on the formation of the packaging work-group in the sustainability consortium (TSC), as well as a discussion of the draft release of version 2.0 of the global packaging project’s (GPP) sustainable packaging indicators. A highlight of the conference was the opening keynote from Andrew Speck of retailer Marks & Spencer, which served to highlight once again Europe’s leadership role in achieving corporate sustainability.
Dr. Vos was a speaker on the “Measurements, Data and Analysis” panel where he spoke about screening life cycle assessments for food packaging, with a particular focus on the implementation of the web-based packaging impact quick evaluation tool (PIQET) at CLEAN’s client Nestlé. His presentation was invited as a last minute substitution for Dr. Lars Lundquist, Packaging Research Scientist with the Nestlé Research Center (NRC) in Lausanne Switzerland.
